After having taken these implicit tests for Race and Skin-tone, I feel very taken aback by my results. I don’t consider myself a discriminatory person; in fact, I have always made friendships with very diverse individuals. I don’t judge by looks, I judge by personality and being told that I have a strong preference for a certain race doesn’t seem right to me. Even after years of living as a minority and learning about the many struggles minorities including African Americans have had to overcome in order to be seen as equals, I cannot believe that my subconscious could have such a strong preference for European Americans when put side by side with African Americans. As for the Skin- tone test, I seem to have a moderate preference to light skin versus dark skin. I feel my results do not accurately reflect my conscious opinions as well because my family consists of both light and darker complexioned individuals and I do not discriminate in any way between them. I believe these tests are intended to show just how much our instinctive preferences can differ from our conscious decisions. I do think the results are valid but I don’t think they are useful because what our brains might initially deem better be it from years of cultural/ social influences or learned associations, is not what we will consciously think or act on.
