I had a very good educational upbringing; even though I’ve attended public schools all my life, they always had excellent rankings in the state. My parents, especially my mom, were always very strict about me doing well in school, but I really think that I have had just as much of an influence to do well from my teachers all through elementary school.
When I moved to the United States from Argentina, I had just turned six and I didn’t speak, read, or write any English, so I had to be pulled out of class for special ESL classes for about a year and a half. It turns out that I didn’t just learn English, but according to my teachers, I was excelling in it. By the second grade, I was doing so much better than the average in both academics and creative arts that I was tested for and later placed in an accelerated learning program called GT or Gifted and Talented.
I believe that having been placed in such a rigorous program, from third to sixth grade, gave me the opportunity I needed to challenge myself and really apply myself to school. I don’t think I would be the same person today if it hadn’t been for the incredible teachers I had in elementary school; they’ve impacted my life greatly by teaching me more about education and myself than could be found in any textbook.
