Community is the result of interactions between groups of people who share a desire to be united but are also individuals with unique goals and objectives. I believe that communities cannot thrive when the members are uniform or when there is no diversity because it’s the little differences that bring people closer together. A good community knows how to use its array of skills to serve a purpose instead of trying to dissuade others from thinking outside of the box.
I think a classroom community differs from the UC community because it is much more focused on one single goal, which is to succeed in the subject area it pertains to. This community is much closer and personal that the UC community because there are more frequent interactions between the members and this results in a better understanding of each individual's qualities and skills. In the classroom, the community is so close knit that personalities are easily distinguished and they can create a classroom dynamic that aids the learning process instead of distracting from it.
The UC community is united more in spirit than anything else. The results of one group within the UC community could have an affect the rest of the group in the long run, but it might take more than one group to make a big change because the UC community relies on the efforts of many people not just a few. The UC community groups are unified by interest and each group is diverse. This type of community has more options in the direction it wants to go because there are many different ways of getting there and of becoming a prestigious establishment for different reasons but always as a unified group.
The city of Cincinnati is a community that runs on mass contributions from the members in order to maintain the services it relies on. Its foundation and inhabitants are deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of the city. To make an impact in such a large community, there would need to be an extremely large group, the majority, would have to be involved. A city is full of life and that is only the result of the efforts of all its members contributing a bit of their efforts in their own way but ultimately they are all working towards unity.
Walking into our small UC class on Wednesday, I saw new faces and familiar ones but I made no negative assumptions of anyone there. In fact, I had only positive expectations due to the fact that it is an honors class. I suppose I had a preconceived notion that everyone in the class are studious and basically good kids, however, I don't think I was mistaken. I didn't think everyone would be perfect or come from perfect families or have lived perfect lives because I believe for a community to be successful there needs to be diversity and variety from the members and their past experiences. I think UC is known for being a successful advocate for diversity; so, in a way, discovering that everyone is different, was not surprising at all.
